All applicants must register through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) at www.nrmp.org and submit application materials through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) of the Association of American Medical Colleges at www.aamc.org, or any methods currently approved by the Graduate Medical Education at Howard University Hospital.
Eligibility
Minimum eligibility criteria for consideration by our program include:
- Graduation from a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accredited medical school on the United States or Canada or World Health Organization approved medical school for International Medical Graduates (IMG).
- Completion of medical school training outside the United States with completion of a Fifth Pathway Program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.
- No more than 2 attempts at any of the USMLE Examination Steps. All USMLE examinations must have been taken within the last five years.
- Completion of all elements of ECFMG Certification with proof (International Medical Graduates only). Current final year US Medical students are exempt from this requirement but must have passed USMLE Step 1 and USMLE Step 2 prior to beginning residency.
- Combined USMLE Steps 1 & 2 scores of 160
Preference Criteria
In addition to above:
- Medical school graduation within 3 years
- Passing USMLE 1 & 2 on first attempt with combined score above 160
- Demonstrated interest in Family Medicine.
- Impressive background/experiences/skills
- Research experience
- Passing step 3 not required but preferred.

Salary
Residents are paid on a bi-weekly schedule. The 2006 – 2007 annual salaries are:
PGY I $39,000
PGY II $40,000
PGY III $41,500
Benefits
Howard University Hospital shares the cost of health benefits (including dental and vision) with the resident for him/her and his/her immediate family members. The Hospital provides disability and life insurance benefits.
Personal Leave
Residents receive 3 weeks of paid annual leave during each year of training. Annual leave is assigned to first years prior to the start of the program by the Scheduling Chief. Second and third year residents may submit vacation leave requests to the Scheduling Chief in May for the next academic year. Sick leave is accrued on a bi-weekly basis at a rate of approximately 4 hours per pay period. Unused sick leave may be carried over from year to year. Residents are also granted paid administrative leave (to attend conference, training sessions, etc.) at the discretion of the department.
Maternity Leave/Family Medical Leave Act
Residents may request maternity leave and leave due to illness of an immediate family member through the Department. The parameters of this leave will be governed by the rules and regulations set forth by the House Staff Manual in conjunction with the rules and regulations governing maternity leave and the Family Medical Leave Act as interpreted by the Office of Human Resources.
Other Benefits
Meals
Residents receive meal cards on a monthly basis in the amount of $200. When completing off-site rotations, residents will receive a “meal ticket reimbursement” check ($200) at intervals of time determined by the Department.
On-Call Room/Computer Room
Residents are assigned an on-call room at the start of the program for use when the residents is on call for the Family Practice Bedservice. Residents are also given access to a computer room inside the main hospital to be used for purposes directly related to patient care and educational training.
Lab Coats/Scrubs/Laundry Services
Residents will receive 3 lab coats during the general hospital orientation period. Each year residents are allowed 1 new lab coat, to be requested through the Department. Scrubs and laundry services for scrubs may be obtained at no cost to the resident through Laundry Services, Facilities Management.
Teaching Conferences
The Residency Program offers conferences which are designed to enhance academic, clinical, and Practice Management competency, in ultimate preparation for Board eligibility. Trainees are expected to attend all departmental conferences and seminars required for the successful completion of each rotation as follows:

- Journal Club
- Teaching Rounds
- Radiology Rounds
- Practice Management
- Morbidity and Mortality Conference
- Board Review
- Behavioral Science Presentations
Howard University Hospital ’s residency programs hold special education conferences which are offered to all trainees. The College of Medicine’s Continuing Medical Education Program also offers a multitude of advanced clinical programs during the year.
